Fitness is perhaps the only thing all Marines have in common, no matter their age, gender, or rank. After all, if you’re not fit, you can’t endure the dire physical and mental conditions found in most Marine combat missions.

As fitness is so vital, it’s no surprise that Marine trainees must pass multiple fitness tests, including the Combat Fitness Test (CFT). If you’re just starting, you probably don’t know much about this test.

Don’t worry, though. In this article, we’re going to explore everything you must know about the CFT, including how to use a CFT calculator.

So, let’s dive right in.

What is the CFT?

The Marine Corps Combat Fitness Test is a physical fitness exam, which tests you explicitly on combat readiness.

Essentially, there are three main components:

  • The Ammo Lift
  • Maneuver Under Fire
  • Move to Contact

With the ammo lift, you have to lift two cans of 30-pound ammo over your head as many times as you can for two minutes.

Moreover, the Maneuver Under Fire tests you on your running abilities amid combat situations. The exam provides simulations of such conditions.

Lastly, the Move to Contact involves an 800-yard run. You have to wear heavy camouflage and protective gear and finish the run as fast as possible.

As you can probably guess, the CFT is not for the faint of heart. It prepares you for combat situations and tests you on your ability to survive in such circumstances.

What Are CFT Calculators?

When you first join the Marine Corps Recruit Training program, you have to go through initial strength testing (IST).

You can think of this as a diagnostic test which sorts you into your weight class.

After you’ve been divided, you can move onto the training.

Training involves many challenging tasks, including:

  1. Alternating between running and crawling (10 and 15 yards respectively)
  2. Carrying an ‘injured’ soldier while weaving through multiple cones and markers. Afterward, you have to run 65 yards with the soldier in your arms.
  3. Lifting two sets of 30-pound ammo for over 75 yards.
  4. Throwing fake grenades at a distance of 22.5 yards. You have to make your grenade hit a marked circle.
  5. Finally, as the last prep work for the test, you have to do five push-ups, lift the 30-pound ammo, and run to the finish line.

Throughout all these tasks, you must use a CFT calculator to track your progress. CFT calculators state your CFT score (according to your current standing).

All you have to do is insert information like:

  • Your gender
  • Your age
  • The time it took you to finish Maneuver Under Fire.
  • The time it took you to complete Move To Contact.
  • Number of Ammo Lifts

The CFT calculator will do the rest of the work. If you want to pass the test, you must do this. Scoring in the CFT has become even more difficult in the past years. The Marine Corps has doubled the minimum passing requirements in 2018.

In short, checking your CFT calculator score allows you to see your standing and make goals to improve it.

Which Equipment is Required for a CFT?

You don’t need much as a participant. Just make sure to come in uniform (camouflage shirt, pants, and boots).

However, if you’re conducting a CFT, you may need:

  • Stopwatches (accurately configured to measure minutes and seconds)
  • Lining material like tape, chalk, and plastic cones
  • Calibrated scales
  • Fake grenades
  • Fake bodies (to simulate casualties/injured soldiers)
  • Multiple sets of 30-pound ammo cans (filled with sand and water)

If you’re practicing for the CFT, you’ll find most of these things at your training institute.

What is a Good CFT Score?

The CFT scoring system differs with each age group and can be a bit confusing. However, CFT calculators can help you in this regard.

If we talk about CFT scoring, you can score a maximum of 100 in each component. In theory, you can achieve 100 points by lifting the ammo cans at least 91 times.

In the other two components, you must finish in under 2:42 minutes to reach 100 points. (This is for the 26-30 age group).

For an overall good CFT score, aim for a total score of 235 or better. Scores between 235 and 300 are first-class scores, with 300 being a perfect score.

What Is a Failing CFT Score?

The previous failing score was anything below 120. However, things are no longer the same, and now, anything below 150 points is a failing score.

If your total score lies between 150 and 199, you have managed to pass the test, but not with a good score.
